Historic Post Office

Situated on a prominent corner of Main Street, the Historic Post Office (circa 1912) stands as an important and visually striking, Romanesque Revival-style landmark in the community, vital to the social and cultural life of Melfort. It is one of the few remaining early 20th century public buildings in the west that symbolized the Federal Government’s presence in small, growing communities, encapsulating the ambitions and optimism of the area’s early residents.

A building assessment and feasibility study conducted in 2012 found the building to be structurally sound, but recommended that a conservation/stabilization program be undertaken immediately to slow the rate of deterioration until a complete restoration can be completed. John Burton of Avatex Heritage Lands offered to partner with the City to purchase the building and preserve the structure. City Council declared the Historical Post Office a municipal heritage property and established the Preservation and Rehabilitation Committee (PARC) to begin the process.

Our cultural heritage provides a sense of unity and belonging within a community and allows us to better understand previous generations and the history of where we come from. The Preservation and Rehabilitation Committee is dedicated to the preservation and rehabilitation of this key heritage landmark for future generations.

Initial Strategy - Preservation of the structure to ensure no further deterioration.

Short-Term Strategy - Rehabilitation of the facility to a useable state, in order to accommodate short-term uses until the ultimate goal can be achieved.

Long-Term Strategy - The creation of a sustainable, thriving, impressive destination/landmark building that is of benefit to the entire community.

"Our heritage is what we value from the past and what we preserve for future generations.  It reflects our collective history, defines the places where we live and work, and gives communities their unique identity. Recognizing and protecting places that have heritage value is an important part of planning for the future. By retaining heritage buildings, structures and landscapes, we not only retain the character of our communities, we also contribute to their social, economic and environmental sustainability.”  - Sask Ministry of Tourism, Park, Culture and Sport, Municipal Heritage Property Designation
